Description

The traditional Greek village salad: vine-ripened tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, sliced red onions, green bell peppers, and Kalamata olives, topped with a thick slab of feta cheese and dressed with extra virgin olive oil and oregano (no lettuce!).

Presentation & How It's Eaten

Served in a large shallow bowl with an intact slab of feta laid on top. Diners break pieces off feta with a fork and toss salad as they eat.

Ingredients

  • 4 large ripe vine tomatoes, cut into wedge chunks

  • 1 English cucumber, sliced into 1/2-inch half-moons

  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced into rings

  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced

  • 1/2 cup Kalamata olives (whole)

  • 200g (7 oz) block Greek feta cheese

  • 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil

  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar

  • 1 tsp dried Greek oregano

  • Flaky sea salt

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. Combine Vegetables: Place tomato wedges, cucumber slices, green pepper rings, red onion slices, and Kalamata olives into a large bowl. Season lightly with flaky sea salt.

  2. Dress Vegetables: Pour extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar over vegetables, tossing gently to coat.

  3. Top with Feta: Place intact slab of feta cheese right on top center of salad.

  4. Season: Drizzle feta slab with a little olive oil and sprinkle dried Greek oregano over entire dish. Serve immediately with crusty bread.

Cooking Tips

  • Never Add Lettuce: Authentic Greek Horiatiki contains no leafy greens; its magic relies exclusively on sweet summer tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, and quality olive oil.
