Description

A classic Greek appetizer featuring a block of salty Greek feta cheese wrapped in crisp sheets of brushed phyllo pastry, pan-fried golden, and drenched in sweet Greek thyme honey and toasted sesame seeds.

Presentation & How It's Eaten

Served hot straight from the skillet on a plate, glistening with honey and sesame seeds. Cut into pieces with a knife and fork while cheese inside is warm and soft.

Ingredients

  • 1 thick block (200g / 7 oz) Greek feta cheese

  • 2 sheets phyllo dough (thawed)

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

  • 3 tbsp Greek thyme honey

  • 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds (black or white)

  • Olive oil for shallow frying

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. Wrap Feta: Pat block of feta dry with paper towels. Brush 1 sheet of phyllo dough with melted butter, lay second sheet on top, and butter again. Place feta block in center.

  2. Fold Package: Envelope phyllo sheet edges tightly around feta block, brushing seam edges with butter to seal into a neat square packet.

  3. Pan Fry: Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Lay wrapped feta packet seam-side down. Fry for 3–4 minutes per side until phyllo crust turns golden brown and crispy.

  4. Drizzle Honey: Transfer hot crispy feta package to a serving plate immediately.

  5. Garnish: Drizzle warm Greek thyme honey generously over crisp top surface and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Serve immediately while warm.

Cooking Tips

  • Pat Feta Dry: Excess moisture on feta block will steam phyllo wrapper from inside; pat dry with paper towels before wrapping.
